Lean  Value  Stream  Mapping  for  Manufacturing  and  Services

Lean Value Stream Mapping Workshop

Workshop Description

Lean Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a lean management technique used to analyze the flow of materials and information currently required to bring a product or service to a Customer.

The goal of Lean Value Stream Mapping is to reduce the end-to-end lead time of a process by highlighting and eliminating sources of waste, as well as by building processes and value streams where the individual processing steps are directly linked to their customers either by continuous flow or by pull.

Workshop Benefits

The benefits of using Value Stream Mapping to analyze and improve a manufacturing, service, and administrative process are:

  • enables broad cross-functional participation in documenting the current state and shaping the future,
  • helps to see and focus on process flow with a vision of an ideal or improved state,
  • shows the linkage between material flow and information flow,
  • provides a powerful tool in identifying waste, so it can be eliminated, contributing to shorter lead times and lower costs, and
  • provides a common language to talk about processes and value streams.

Key Topics and Learning Points

The "Lean Value Stream Mapping for Manufacturing, Service and Administrative Processes" workshop covers:

  • Introduction to Lean Management
  • The Five Lean Management Principles
  • The Seven Lean Wastes - Muda
  • Objectives and Benefits of Value Stream Mapping
  • Lean Value Stream Mapping - A Step-by-Step Approach
  • Develop a Charter & Establish the Team
  • Document Current State → Kick-off
  • Document Current State → First Value Stream Walk
  • Document Current State → Map Layout
  • Document Current State → Second Value Stream Walk
  • Document Current State → Map Details
  • Document Current State → Information Flow
  • Document Current State → Map Summary
  • Analyze Current State
  • Design Future State

  • Manage Transformation Plan Execution

An introduction to other Lean Management methods, including 5S Visual Workplace Organization, Standard Work, Mistake Proofing & Poka-Yoke, Rapid Changeover (SMED), or Kanban Scheduling Systems can be included, based on the organization's specific requirements and needs.

Workshop Requirements

None

Workshop Duration

This course is typically delivered as a one- or two-day workshop.

Who Should Attend

Process owners, managers, and employees throughout the organization involved in the critical manufacturing, service, and administrative processes that require efficiency improvements.

→  Lean Value Stream Mapping Kaizen Event Workshop

An actual Lean Value Stream Mapping event consists of 1 to 2 days of planning and preparation, followed by a two-day or three-day Value Stream Mapping event. During the event, the Value Stream Mapping methodology will be applied by the group to a specific high-impact manufacturing, service, or administrative process. Typical Value Stream Mapping events have if properly prepared, a payback time of less than 3 months.
